We looked today at the rise and fall of 2 Mesoamerican civilizations. These civilizations both develop agriculture, sophisticated cities, systems of writing, advanced mathematics and many other characteristics of successful societies, however, they do not achieve the long lasting success that is seen in other parts of the world.
Compare the populations of Teotihuacan and the Maya with cities of Europe ( http://www.tulane.edu/~august/H303/handouts/Population.htm ). How do you explain the differences you see between these two? Consider the process for the development of societies we talked about earlier this semester (hunter-gatherer, horticulture, agriculture, industy) along with our discussion on cultural identity in Africa yesterday.
Make sure you respond to at least one other person's answer as well.
