I would like for you to answer two questions:
1. What exactly does Thomas Paine mean by this?
2. Do you agree with his statement?
Today in class we discussed many reasons that American colonists would not have wanted to totally break away from Great Britain and began reading Thomas Paine's "Common Sense". In his pamphlet, Paine addresses one of these reasons in his statement "The commerce by which she (America) hath enriched herself are the necessaries of life, and will always have a market while eating is the custom of Europe..."
I would like for you to answer two questions: 1. What exactly does Thomas Paine mean by this? 2. Do you agree with his statement?

1. Thomas Paine means that America provides a lot of supplies that Europe wants/needs. As long as America produces these supplies Europe will continue to be involved in their trading business.

1.)Thomas Paine means that America is doing all of this work and exporting all of these materials to Britain, that way the British can get the benifits.

1. Thomas Paine means that America was fortunate to have so many raw materials and they made their living by trading these items with Britain. As long as Britain was consuming these goods, America would keep prospering.

1. What Thomas Paine is saying is that many colonists profited form trading with Britain. The British strongly desired the colonies' raw materials, and as long as they still consumed and coveted those goods, then America would continue to flourish.

1. What Thomas Paine means by this statment is that America benifited from trading raw materials with Britian and Europe. Also, as long as America keeps trading the goods, Europe/Britian is going to keep controlling the trade but America would still prosper.

1. i think Thomas Paine means that as long as they keep providing goods like suger, tobacco and different cloths and things of that nature, people will keep wanting to buy their goods and trade with them.

1. Thomas Paine means that as long as Britain continues to have a "sweet tooth" and a desire for the raw materials that America can produce, then America and it's citizens will flourish.

1. In his statement, Thomas Paine is saying that by trading with Britain, both the colonies and Britian are benifiting from each other. The colonists get all of the money by trading out their goods and Britain is getting new materials to sell to its' people. So, both prosper through trade.

1.) Thomas Paine uses this statement in order to back up what he says just before;"America would have flourished as much and probably much more, had no European power had any thing to do with her." He is trying to get the message across that America would do very good on her own because Europe will still need and want what she has to offer.

1.Thomas Paine means that America needs to trade to survive. America has the resources to make most of the goods that they buy from Europe but, they either do not know it or they could not make them. On the other hand, Europe does not need to trade to survive, but they must because they, especially England, "need" the resources from other countries in order to survive and make their life as easy as possible.

1) Thomas Paine means that Europe is just wants America for all the goods and resources. they didn't really care about what happened to the people as long as they were getting what they needed. yes the colonists were benefitting from this by making some income, but they could have more opurtunities if they were allowed to trade with other countries. but as long as they want the goods, america will still be able to trade.

1.Thomas Paine was saying that America was lucky enough to have land that was so rich and agriculturally diverse. Also as long as America continue trades with Britain they will keep using America for their goods and helping America prosper. Although Britain is aiding in Americas prospering they could do it without the help of Britain because of their surplus of goods.

1) Thomas Paine means that the food and other resources the colonies produced were essential to the European food and trading supply. They needed the huge amount of agricultural goods we produced, lest they all starved.

1) Thomas Paine means that American goods will always be needed in Europe. America produced the raw materials England needed to make the goods that they exported to other countries and back to America, a example is cotton, cotton was grown in the south, sent to England and made into textiles then it was sent back to be sold. Both nations benefited by this trade but it was essential for Europe to receive the raw material for business.

Thomas Paine is saying that America provides all these goods for Europe like tobacco and sugar and Europe just reeps the benefits of America's bountiful crops. Europe is basically using America for money to pay off their debts.
